FAQs
Uncommon Answers to some Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this a joke?
A: Hardly. Just last year, M4KSF raised more than $90,000 for DonorsChoose.org. In just under 10 years, several chapters of M4K nationwide have raised nearly $750,000 for child-related charities. Additionally, we have been featured in such venerable medial outlets as NPR’s Marketplace, the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Weekly, Los Angeles Times, and Time Out: New York.
Q: When does the 2011 season begin?
A: “Clean Shave Day” is November 8, 2010. And “Clean Shave Day” is the day that marks the beginning of the contest. What you should do is shave your entire face on this day, and come on down to Cassanova Lounge, 527 Valencia Street (between 16th and 17th streets) in San Francisco at 7:30pm. At that time, representatives from M4KSF will be on hand to introduce themselves, fire you up, and tell you all about this year’s growing season and how things will work. In the meantime, you gotta register your growing page and pick some DonorsChoose.org projects that you want your mustache to fund. How do you do that? This page right here will explain it all for you quite easily. Please don’t be alarmed — it looks like a complicated process, but it doesn’t take longer than 10 minutes, and you’re off and running, helping some kids who really need your support! And your ‘stache’s support, too.
Q: I am a woman. Can I join?
A: Mustaches for Kids does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of sex, age, nationality, or other stuff. Anyone can raise money for the cause. Just remember, the mustache is more in the heart than on the face.
Q: I want to do it, but I’m scared.
A: That’s not really a question, but we will respond nonetheless. We suggest you suck it up and take one for the team. It’s a good cause, and you’ll have fun.
Q: I’m very sensitive. What if people make fun of me?
A: Stare them down like Zeus from Mt. Olympus, and declaim, “It’s for the kids.” Then ask them for a donation.
Q: Why are we doing this, philosophically speaking?
A: Mustaches for Kids is not your typical fundraising organization. The demographic that is drawn to this competition sadly is not one that is necessarily known for philanthropy. So we think it’s a great opportunity for people to do good and have a good time doing it.
Q: Are you sure this isn’t a joke?
A: Yes.
Q: Swear?
A: We swear on the oath of the mustache that this is not a joke.
Q: How does the fundraising part work?
A: It’s simple! We’ll show you how to build your own “Giving Page” on www.donorschoose.org. Then you can select classroom projects that you’d like your mustache to fund. And then you ask people to support your mustache! They go to your giving page, and can select to support any of the amazing classroom projects from low-income schools that are there (or any of the thousands of deserving projects nationwide). They give a little money. And then the kids in those classrooms get new books, supplies, equipment, and all kinds of awesome stuff that helps them learn!!
Q: Will you be forming any splinter charities involving neckbeards?
A: Not any time soon.
